Some of my favorite things are raspberry tea, Mediterranean foods, great literature, Bible study, writing, and walks in the woods. When I graduated from college with a degree in creative writing and a secondary level teaching certificate, I couldn’t wait to share my love of literature and writing with young people who had fresh and exciting ideas to discover and communicate. I hoped to become a positive contributor to their lives as many teachers had been to mine. But the classroom environment was framed by strict parameters. A prescribed one-size-fits-all curriculum, an emphasis on test scores to achieve school funding, and crowded classrooms were some of the rigid confines that left little room for the creativity that fosters authentic learning.

Once I became a mother, I was fascinated by the innate love of learning my son had from birth. I feared that entering the school system with all of its shortcomings might rob him of that. After his tumultuous year in a preschool classroom, I decided to pursue what I believed would be the best path for his education: homeschooling—a path I’d never expected to take. Later diagnosed with high-functioning autism at age six, he is now a homeschool graduate forging his own path by pursuing a degree he is passionate about. Given the difficulties of his early classroom experience and subsequent diagnosis, I can't imagine how he may have fared had we chosen traditional schooling. His home education has given him tremendous success in college and—most importantly—he has never lost his love of learning.

You can read more about our autism and homeschooling story in
my book, The Course You Choose: A Mother's Triumphant Journey of Faith Through Autism, Divorce, and Homeschooling Her Remarkable Son. I am passionate about homeschooling because I have witnessed the remarkable results it consistently demonstrates, and I want to help other families navigate this path. I have a unique perspective rooted in personal experience as a teacher, mother, and K-12 home educator. Please visit the Services page to see how I may be able to help you or your student(s). May God bless the important work you're doing as a parent and may you find a love of learning with your children.

Homeschooling had one feature that no other educational option could offer: If something wasn’t working for my child, I could change it.
